People look for luck in many places...

at the end of a rainbow

in a Leprechaun's hat

rubbing a rabbit's foot

picking up a shiny penny

I know a lot of people think of the number 13 as unlucky,
but I consider it
a very LUCKY number!

Word has it an upcoming Rockets player will have 13 on his back.

And some people are just looking to
get "lucky"!

In my paranormal short story,
THE SEDUCTION OF DAMIAN,
Damian has a "lucky" experience of his own.
The lipstick tube she held up in triumph was as orange as the makeup it contained. She rubbed it over her lips, making the line much higher than her actual lip. A circus clown would have been proud. When she smiled her dingy, yellow teeth had a complimentary orange shadow.
“Um, if you’ll excuse me,” he begged her, “I’m just going to—”
“Slip into something more comfortable?” Her nasally giggle made every hair on his body stand on end, waving tiny white flags of surrender.
“Yeah, something like that.”
“I could help you.”
He swallowed the bile that rose in the back of his throat. “That’s okay, I can manage.”
His feet couldn’t move fast enough as he retreated to his bedroom. His feet ate up the stairs, taking them three at a time. Fighting the urge to slam the door, he instead fumbled with the lock, hoping she wouldn’t try to follow him. He prayed she’d left her wand at home—with the rest of her clothes. He paused, freezing the breath in his lungs, and listened. When only silence answered from the other side of the door he sighed.
Rummaging through the dresser, he pulled out an armful of underwear and dumped it on the bed. He jammed a foot into some very unattractive tighty-whities, his toe getting stuck on the hem. He hopped around until he freed his wayward appendage, nearly ripping out the seam to do so. A quick cup of his hand to arrange things down below, he pulled on some boxer-briefs, completing the armament with an additional pair of boxers. With his genitals safely hidden beneath three layers of cotton, he reached for a pair of jeans.
Levi’s, not Lucky’s.
No one would be getting ‘lucky’ in this house tonight!

Damian is available via Kindle, Nook and other Ebook.

Welcome Back, Sixers!
Today's six comes from my paranormal short story
The Seduction of Damian
(The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #1)
currently available via Kindle, Nook, and other ebook.

In this snippet, Damian comes face to face
with the first female determined to make
Paranormal Partner's Most Eligible Bachelor hers...

*****

A smile spread to her thin, barely-there lips as a nervous, nasally giggle burst into the air between them.

“Actually, Damian, I’m here to help you.” Her attempted purr sounded more like a strangled cat’s yowl.

“Oh?” His dangly bits shriveled. Good hell, why hadn’t he put on some clothes?

Sweet Saturday Samples (10/29)

Today's sample comes from my paranormal short story
The Seduction of Damian
(The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #1)
currently available via Kindle, Nook, and other ebook.

In this snippet, Damian has learned that he has been voted
Paranormal Partners Magazine's Most Eligible Bachelor.
He's not excited about the title.
In fact, he's mortified.
The "honor" has been known to ruin a male's life.

*****

The night was warmer than it’d looked from his kitchen window and a trickle of sweat ran between his shoulder blades. The neighborhood was quiet, except for the caw of a few ravens as they winged toward their nests for the night, retreating to the mature trees—which would soon lose their leaves—hanging over the sidewalk.

Damian waved to a couple of ghouls as they strolled down the sidewalk. Their small bat bobbed along, stretching its leash to the limit.

“Congratulations!” The male ghoul’s thumb rose, his head tipping in an atta-boy. His wife’s yellow eyes moved over Damian in a slow analyzing appraisal. When her vivid blue tongue snaked out to run over her thin bottom lip, Damian fought a shudder and thanked whatever lucky star he might have that she was already taken.

So, word is out. Great!

Life as he knew it would never be the same.

He looked around at his yard and decided to trim the hedges, weed the flower beds, hand water the entire lawn … and for good measure, he would weed-whack something. Or maybe he would assess every blade of grass to assure the entire lawn was in fact the same length. Sucking in a deep breath, his lungs filled with fresh air and his mind cleared. His worries floated away on an exhale and Damian busied himself with the chores that were his stress release.

If nothing else, he could maintain control of his yard while the maelstrom whipped the rest of his life into chaos. At least he had Jocelyn. He now needed her friendship more than ever.

An orange housecat streaked across the street and raced between Damian’s legs. The thing turned around to hiss at him just before hurrying over to lift its leg on Damian’s prize rose bush.

“Hello! Cat’s don’t do that.”

Red clouded his vision and he had to remind himself not to strangle the young shifter. It wasn’t the kid’s fault he had no father to shake some sense into him. His mother was a saint and everyone could see she needed someone to take care of her.

“Get home!” Damian’s gaze narrowed and stared into the defiant yellow eyes. He stomped his foot and water droplets flew up from the grass, coating his legs. “Go home or I’ll have to take you there myself.”

The little cat blew a disgruntled breath out his nose and turned around to saunter arrogantly back across the street. If the kid went into Jocelyn’s yard, Damian would feel obligated to chase him out of there, too. Instead the shifter darted three houses down Mysterious Lane before wiggling under a Bougainvillea bush. He watched the cat disappear and more than half expected to find a little something strategically deposited on his welcome mat tomorrow evening. He hoped he remembered to look before he stepped in it and ruined yet another pair of shoes.

Glancing house by house he noticed all was quiet, no sign of trouble—or females. Even Jocelyn’s house was dark. Which wasn’t unexpected. She worked the evening shift at the museum four nights a week. He didn’t understand her draw to the musty old place. But who was he to judge? She loved her job.

She also loved to make him crazy!

The house was multi-colored, showing off Pepto-pink where the mint-green peeled away, and some kind of orange under the pink. The Kaleidoscope of color was an eyesore to everyone—except Jocelyn.

When she’d first moved in, he’d offered to fix the place up for her. Not out of the kindness of his heart, but because the sight of all that disrepair made his retinas burn. That had been a no-go and so he did his best to ignore the house while being friends with the female who lived inside the atrocity.
With a shake of the head he turned back to admire his own meticulously cut, green grass and recently painted white colonial home. He walked back up the long, flower-lined walkway, pausing at the front door with his hand on the handle when catcalls, whistles and car honks made his feet stutter. Without turning around he went inside to seriously consider taking Jocelyn up on her offer for sanctuary.

*****
Okay, so last month we learned I have a serious aversion
to chucking myself off of high places.

This month I'm going out on a limb
--figuratively speaking (*points to self* chicken, remember?)--
to admit I HATE scary things!

Maybe my chicken-ness stems from my brothers
jumping out from dark corners and screaming BOO!
or maybe...
it comes from watching JAWS at the drive-in.

For years I had a reoccurring nightmare Stormtroopers were raiding my house.

Luckily, they were never smart enough
to search under my bed.

Apparently I was not the human
they were looking for.

Ha! Stupid Stormtroopers!

I actually drew blood on a date
while watching Michael Myers scare the bejeezus out of people in Halloween
I probably should have said no to the very polite invitation, stayed home, and avoided the embarrassment.

Yeah, films with axe-wielding maniacs
are not my thing.

Nor are books with things that
go bump in the night.

I am, however, a HUGE fan of vampires,
but only the poor, misunderstood ones,
who are ultimately good ... thanks to their females.

I have two such vampires in my
The Gossip of Mysterious Lane series.

“I’m your friend, which means my job is to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and your head small enough to fit through the door. You’re right; I’m sure it won’t be long before females are lined up around the block waiting to stroke your ego.”
“Not funny.”
She kept talking right over him. “If you ask, I’ll bet they’d stroke other things for you, too.”

Sweet Saturday Samples (10/15)

Today's Sample comes from my paranormal short story,
The Seduction of Damian
(The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #1)
currently available via Kindle, Nook, or other ebook.

In this sample we meet Damian and learn right along with him
just how much his life is about to change...

*****

Damian’s tongue spat every curse word that crossed through his mind, some of them not even English.
The face smiling at him from the front page of Paranormal Partners was one Damian recognized. Hell, he should. He looked into those dark eyes every evening in the mirror.
He crumpled up the newspaper between his big palms and chucked the wad across the room, not taking the time to relish the nothing-but-net. Plowing his fingers through his black hair he considered the ramifications of what this would mean.
His head met the solid wood top of his kitchen table, lifting for a second before dropping down seeking another hard thud. With any luck the motion would wake him from this cold-sweat kind of daymare.
Yeah … no such luck. Thud! This was reality. Thud! And this reality sucked!
More than one male’s life had been ruined by the ‘honor’ bestowed by PP and their powers that be. Females considered it a real accomplishment to spend a few hours in the arms of the poor sap named their most eligible bachelor.
No, thank you. Damian wasn’t interested in that kind of flattery. And he sure as hell wasn’t interested in the desperate females who lurked in that particular cesspool.
The dating rag had arrived in his mailbox early this evening and Damian wasn’t sure how he should handle the unwanted endorsement. It wasn’t like he could suddenly go unlisted; his number was already out in the world just waiting to be Googled.
As if the phone knew he was considering pulling the plug from the wall, the damned thing started to ring; an annoying shrill that set his fangs on edge.
“Perfect. Just freakin’ perfect.”
The journey across the kitchen became more of a walk through quicksand. One miserably slow footstep at a time. The phone sat prone on the countertop, mocking him, and a single look at the caller id had him rolling his eyes. Reaching for the phone he now understood what relief truly felt like.
“No laughing, Jocelyn.”
She did anyway.
Her giggles carried through the line and washed over Damian, easing the tension in his shoulders. Damn him, a grin lifted the corners of his mouth.
“I’m sorry.” She snorted. “I know it’s not funny.” Giggle, giggle, snort. Deep breath. “Do you wanna move in h—” Her question was cut off by another snort.
Damian shook his head and snorted right along with her, but not in amusement. “No.”
She cleared her throat and he imagined her pursing her lips to gain some composure. “Who knows; maybe nobody will care and you’ll be able to continue living your life without the nuisance of drooling women.”
Her words were meant as a comfort, but instead of calming him, they spiked a defensiveness that he didn’t understand—and was completely absurd.
“Come on, it’s not that far-fetched to think that I’m a great catch.”
Her laughter died a quick death. “Damian, you are a great catch!”
His chest puffed out a little and he was glad that she couldn’t see his peacock move.
“You’re every girl’s dream; handsome and sweet and funny and—” She trailed off.
“Yes?” A cheesy grin pulled back over his fangs.
Another snort; a scoff. “I’m your friend. Which means my job is to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and your head small enough to fit through the door. You’re right; I’m sure it won’t be long before females are lined up around the block waiting to stroke your ego.”
