Sweet Saturday Snippet (1/21) ~ Heart Ache

In today's Sample, HEART ACHE's Nikolai Voinea is awaiting Gabrielle's return to work.
She's been sick and life hasn't been the same without her.

*****

Thump-thump.
Thump-thump.
His blood sensed her a split second before he heard her.
The door to his office opened. Her tropical scent flooded the room; coconut and lemongrass. Her breath hitched. “Hey. I didn’t expect you to be here this early.”
His whole body warmed at the sound of her sweet voice. Thankfully his back faced the doorway. He needed a minute to compose himself. He took a deep breath, listening to her movements as she approached.
“Niko? Are you okay?”
Every footstep, every whisper of her clothing screamed through the silent air to his sensitive hearing as she crossed the room to him. He braced himself for the moment when he would turn and face the female who haunted his days, his nights, and every moment in between.
The light touch of her fingers brushing over his shoulder wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but knowledge didn’t stop the sharp intake of breath and his jump at her contact.
Startled by his reaction, she gasped, a quiet cooing sound that was nearly his undoing.
He turned with solemn reverence to observe the angel in front of him. He had to remind himself to keep his expression in check as he forced an emotionless smile.
Gabrielle Ryan, with her shiny auburn hair, her porcelain skin, and slim, toned body, caused every part of him to react to her mere presence. Her blue eyes searched his eyes, his face.
“I’m sorry. I thought you heard me come in.”
“You just surprised me.” He couldn’t very well tell her he craved her touch more than his next breath.
Her hand moved to touch the bare skin where his shirt had been rolled way from his forearm. Her brows crinkled. “Are you okay?”
“Yes. Are you feeling better?”
She smiled. “Much.”
“Glad to hear it. I hope you had a nice weekend?”
Weekends were an excruciating reality that bit him in the ass two days out of every seven. It was those two days he missed her like a man possessed. It was those two days he fretted over her social calendar. Gabby was beautiful and, to Nikolai’s horror, he wasn’t the only male–vampire or human–who’d noticed.
“My weekend was okay,” she whispered, using her bejeweled left hand to brush a curl away from her cheek.
Oh, sweet Goddess, no.
His stomach rolled, his heart threatened to beat right out of his chest, as he saw the pathetic excuse for a diamond that had been placed on her finger by a male who wasn’t him.
He choked back his wounded pride and breaking heart. “What’s that on your finger, Gabby?”
She took a deep breath, holding it for moment before exhaling. Her cheeks flooded with color and her eyes suddenly found the carpeting the most interesting thing in the room.
“I’m engaged.”

Sweet Saturday Samples (10/29)

Today's sample comes from my paranormal short story
The Seduction of Damian
(The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #1)
currently available via Kindle, Nook, and other ebook.

In this snippet, Damian has learned that he has been voted
Paranormal Partners Magazine's Most Eligible Bachelor.
He's not excited about the title.
In fact, he's mortified.
The "honor" has been known to ruin a male's life.

*****

The night was warmer than it’d looked from his kitchen window and a trickle of sweat ran between his shoulder blades. The neighborhood was quiet, except for the caw of a few ravens as they winged toward their nests for the night, retreating to the mature trees—which would soon lose their leaves—hanging over the sidewalk.

Damian waved to a couple of ghouls as they strolled down the sidewalk. Their small bat bobbed along, stretching its leash to the limit.

“Congratulations!” The male ghoul’s thumb rose, his head tipping in an atta-boy. His wife’s yellow eyes moved over Damian in a slow analyzing appraisal. When her vivid blue tongue snaked out to run over her thin bottom lip, Damian fought a shudder and thanked whatever lucky star he might have that she was already taken.

So, word is out. Great!

Life as he knew it would never be the same.

He looked around at his yard and decided to trim the hedges, weed the flower beds, hand water the entire lawn … and for good measure, he would weed-whack something. Or maybe he would assess every blade of grass to assure the entire lawn was in fact the same length. Sucking in a deep breath, his lungs filled with fresh air and his mind cleared. His worries floated away on an exhale and Damian busied himself with the chores that were his stress release.

If nothing else, he could maintain control of his yard while the maelstrom whipped the rest of his life into chaos. At least he had Jocelyn. He now needed her friendship more than ever.

An orange housecat streaked across the street and raced between Damian’s legs. The thing turned around to hiss at him just before hurrying over to lift its leg on Damian’s prize rose bush.

“Hello! Cat’s don’t do that.”

Red clouded his vision and he had to remind himself not to strangle the young shifter. It wasn’t the kid’s fault he had no father to shake some sense into him. His mother was a saint and everyone could see she needed someone to take care of her.

“Get home!” Damian’s gaze narrowed and stared into the defiant yellow eyes. He stomped his foot and water droplets flew up from the grass, coating his legs. “Go home or I’ll have to take you there myself.”

The little cat blew a disgruntled breath out his nose and turned around to saunter arrogantly back across the street. If the kid went into Jocelyn’s yard, Damian would feel obligated to chase him out of there, too. Instead the shifter darted three houses down Mysterious Lane before wiggling under a Bougainvillea bush. He watched the cat disappear and more than half expected to find a little something strategically deposited on his welcome mat tomorrow evening. He hoped he remembered to look before he stepped in it and ruined yet another pair of shoes.

Glancing house by house he noticed all was quiet, no sign of trouble—or females. Even Jocelyn’s house was dark. Which wasn’t unexpected. She worked the evening shift at the museum four nights a week. He didn’t understand her draw to the musty old place. But who was he to judge? She loved her job.

She also loved to make him crazy!

The house was multi-colored, showing off Pepto-pink where the mint-green peeled away, and some kind of orange under the pink. The Kaleidoscope of color was an eyesore to everyone—except Jocelyn.

When she’d first moved in, he’d offered to fix the place up for her. Not out of the kindness of his heart, but because the sight of all that disrepair made his retinas burn. That had been a no-go and so he did his best to ignore the house while being friends with the female who lived inside the atrocity.
With a shake of the head he turned back to admire his own meticulously cut, green grass and recently painted white colonial home. He walked back up the long, flower-lined walkway, pausing at the front door with his hand on the handle when catcalls, whistles and car honks made his feet stutter. Without turning around he went inside to seriously consider taking Jocelyn up on her offer for sanctuary.

Sweet Saturday Samples (10/15)

Today's Sample comes from my paranormal short story,
The Seduction of Damian
(The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #1)
currently available via Kindle, Nook, or other ebook.

In this sample we meet Damian and learn right along with him
just how much his life is about to change...

*****

Damian’s tongue spat every curse word that crossed through his mind, some of them not even English.
The face smiling at him from the front page of Paranormal Partners was one Damian recognized. Hell, he should. He looked into those dark eyes every evening in the mirror.
He crumpled up the newspaper between his big palms and chucked the wad across the room, not taking the time to relish the nothing-but-net. Plowing his fingers through his black hair he considered the ramifications of what this would mean.
His head met the solid wood top of his kitchen table, lifting for a second before dropping down seeking another hard thud. With any luck the motion would wake him from this cold-sweat kind of daymare.
Yeah … no such luck. Thud! This was reality. Thud! And this reality sucked!
More than one male’s life had been ruined by the ‘honor’ bestowed by PP and their powers that be. Females considered it a real accomplishment to spend a few hours in the arms of the poor sap named their most eligible bachelor.
No, thank you. Damian wasn’t interested in that kind of flattery. And he sure as hell wasn’t interested in the desperate females who lurked in that particular cesspool.
The dating rag had arrived in his mailbox early this evening and Damian wasn’t sure how he should handle the unwanted endorsement. It wasn’t like he could suddenly go unlisted; his number was already out in the world just waiting to be Googled.
As if the phone knew he was considering pulling the plug from the wall, the damned thing started to ring; an annoying shrill that set his fangs on edge.
“Perfect. Just freakin’ perfect.”
The journey across the kitchen became more of a walk through quicksand. One miserably slow footstep at a time. The phone sat prone on the countertop, mocking him, and a single look at the caller id had him rolling his eyes. Reaching for the phone he now understood what relief truly felt like.
“No laughing, Jocelyn.”
She did anyway.
Her giggles carried through the line and washed over Damian, easing the tension in his shoulders. Damn him, a grin lifted the corners of his mouth.
“I’m sorry.” She snorted. “I know it’s not funny.” Giggle, giggle, snort. Deep breath. “Do you wanna move in h—” Her question was cut off by another snort.
Damian shook his head and snorted right along with her, but not in amusement. “No.”
She cleared her throat and he imagined her pursing her lips to gain some composure. “Who knows; maybe nobody will care and you’ll be able to continue living your life without the nuisance of drooling women.”
Her words were meant as a comfort, but instead of calming him, they spiked a defensiveness that he didn’t understand—and was completely absurd.
“Come on, it’s not that far-fetched to think that I’m a great catch.”
Her laughter died a quick death. “Damian, you are a great catch!”
His chest puffed out a little and he was glad that she couldn’t see his peacock move.
“You’re every girl’s dream; handsome and sweet and funny and—” She trailed off.
“Yes?” A cheesy grin pulled back over his fangs.
Another snort; a scoff. “I’m your friend. Which means my job is to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and your head small enough to fit through the door. You’re right; I’m sure it won’t be long before females are lined up around the block waiting to stroke your ego.”

Sweet Saturday Samples (10/8)

Today's Sample comes from my contemporary romance
In It To Win It
currently available via Kindle, Nook, other ebook

Meet Jane Alexander...

***

GRAYSON PIERCE WAS LARGER THAN LIFE—and annoying as hell.
The man had been a thorn in Jane’s side for nearly twenty years—if she counted elementary school, she guessed it was even longer than that—and he’d never been a bigger pain than in this very moment.
“Can you do that, Jane?” Dale asked from behind his desk.
Dale was the News Director for KHB—and her boss. His blue eyes were no nonsense and as he ran a hand over his thinning blond hair, Jane knew that his question wasn’t up for debate.
Sweat coated her palms and she bit her lip. Jane wanted to say no. She wanted to say that there was no way she was going on the road to follow Pierce’s team around the freakin’ country while they played their way to the World Series. It was bad enough she had to report on how successful he was, but now, she was going to have to follow the jackass just to shove a microphone in his face so he could tell her how awesome he was.
She wasn’t bitter though.
“Sure thing, Dale,” she said through clenched teeth. “When do I leave?”
“You and Nate will head out tomorrow afternoon. First stop, Vegas.”
“Okay, I’ll go pack.” She turned on her heel but was stopped when Dale cleared his throat. She paused in the doorway of his office and her already sucky situation got worse.
“Get an exclusive if you can. Anything nobody else has. There’s a raise in it for ya.”

Sweet Saturday Samples (10/1)

This week's Sweet Saturday Sample comes from my new release
His Destiny is Karma (The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #2).

Vampire Playboy Alexander would rather have
his fangs removed than sitting on a flying tin can.
To make matters worse, the empty seat next to him
gets filled with his worst nightmare!

“Hi sir, I’ve got an unaccompanied minor here—”
Alex bit the inside of his cheek to keep from asking, ‘so?’
“—and he’ll be sitting next to you.” She flashed him a smile that made his groin beg for attention.
The kid flopped down in the seat. “I’m Colby.”
Adrenaline seized Alex by the throat, tightening its grip until he saw stars. He looked at Hank for assistance only to find the damn male was asleep. Or pretending to be, rather. Verified by an exaggerated, fake snore. Alex jammed his elbow into Hank’s side and was rewarded by a satisfying grunt.
“Thank you.” She smiled at Alex for a second before turning her attention to the little nuisance. “Okay, buddy, stay right here at the end of the flight and I’ll come get you. Let me know if you need anything while we’re in the air.”
“What’s your name?” the kid asked as soon as the woman left.
Alex ignored the question and watched the human’s curvaceous backside.
“My mom says it’s rude to stare.”
Alex blinked and looked down at the pest sitting next to him. The smack slurp smack made Alex’s fingers curl into fists. He wanted to knock that twisted mound of Double Bubble down the kid’s throat, but instead defended himself—by flat out lying.
“I wasn’t staring.”
“Yeah, you were.” Colby leaned over in his seat.
Realization reached out and slapped Alex. This kid wasn’t a kid at all. This was a young shifter in the next seat, currently ogling the swaying hips move down the aisle.
“Mmm-mmm.” The prepubescent low moan interrupted his thoughts. Colby fastened his seatbelt. “She does have a nice butt, don’t you think?”
Alex blinked again, this time completely dumbfounded by the little male who shouldn’t be looking at grown women’s butts.
“How old are you?”
“I’ll tell you how old I am … if you tell me your name.”
Smartass little cretin!
Alex would like to find the kid’s father and offer a large dose of parenting advice. Which was saying something because Alex knew nothing about kids. Except that this one needed a swift kick in the ass.
“I asked you a question,” Alex said through gritted teeth.
Colby snorted, going to great exaggerated lengths to make sure Alex saw the eye roll. “Fine. I’m nine. Now will you tell me your name? I mean, come on, dude, it’s gonna be a long flight.”
The plane lifted off the ground and Alex’s stomach pitched. He closed his eyes and held his breath. His hands actually ached because of the death grip he had on the arm rests.

“You don’t like to fly, huh?"
So, the kid was a genius too!

Sweet Saturday Samples (9/17)

In this week's Sweet Saturday Sample,
In It To Win It's Grayson is trying to convince
a very reluctant, very gun-shy Jane
to have dinner with him.

***

Grayson stood, waiting for Jane to find her voice again. Her eyes looked him over from head to toe and he couldn’t tell if that was a good thing or not. But man, it felt good to have that much of her touching him. He swallowed hard then returned the favor by taking an inventory of her as well. She was as gorgeous as ever; dressed in jeans and a white t-shirt, totally casual. Her brown hair was pulled up in a ponytail.
“Can I sit here?” He waved a hand toward the stool next to hers.
“It’s a free country.” She closed her laptop and shoved it into its case, taking no care for the bag or the computer. “I have to get going anyway; my flight is about to board.”
As she stood, he reached out and snatched up her hand. Her hands were chilly and oh, so tiny. His engulfed hers and yet they fit perfectly together. Just like always.
“Will you have dinner with me?” The words were flung out into the open before his brain could catch up with his mouth.
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.” Always a glutton. Inside, he was cringing as he threw his ego on the floor for her to crush beneath her flip-flop. Outside … he rested a foot on the bottom rung of the bar stool and prayed that he looked the calm, cool, collected he didn’t feel.
“No, I really can’t. It’s against the rules.”
He smiled and felt a nervous twitch to his lips. He bit down on his bottom lip to keep it under control. “What rules?” he asked.
Her eyes narrowed and her lips tightened into a frown. “The no-fraternizing-with-the-athletes rule,” she said the words in a duh! tone.
He laughed. “That’s not a real rule.”
She straightened her spine and hiked her bag onto her shoulder. “It’s a personal rule. I have a reputation to uphold.”
“Fair enough.” He could respect her having scruples, but it didn’t change the fact that it had been too long since he’d talked with her. The few moments in her room didn’t count. “We could consider it a working dinner. We could talk—on the record.”

Sweet Saturday Samples (9/10)

This week's Sweet Sample comes from my contemporary romance
Fade to Black
currently available on
Kindle, Nook, other ebook

In this sample while out covering an Amber Alert, Rich Spencer, News Photographer is fighting off the urge to defend Kate's honor against another loud-mouthed reporter. Trying to talk Rich out of decking the jerk is his best friend, Nate Hughes.

***

“Dude, what is going on with you?” Nate hissed in a hushed whispered.
“I don’t know,” Rich answered honestly.
“Well, you’d better figure it out because the protective caveman crap is going to get you into trouble—in more ways than one,” Nate warned.
The press conference started, and Kate did great. She asked all the right questions, making Greg look like the rookie. With the final question asked and answered, the crowed dissipated.
“Come on,” Kate whispered as she tugged lightly on Rich’s jacket sleeve. “Let’s interview some of the neighbors.”
For the next twenty minutes they went door to door, asking neighbors what they’d seen. It was weird that nobody had seen or heard anything. It was as if this little princess had disappeared into thin air. Kate looked defeated, her shoulders drooped, as they headed back toward the microwave truck.
Suddenly her head jerked to the left. “Shh!” She turned around and stared at Rich with wide eyes. “Do you hear that?”
He nodded, then lifted the camera onto his shoulder and hit record with his thumb. “Go ahead. I’m rolling.”
The two of them cautiously walked up between two houses to a small shed. “Be careful,” Rich whispered, suddenly wondering how smart of an idea this was. There was no telling what—or who—might be in there. The front doors were slightly ajar, and there was a whimpering coming from inside.
“Mary?” Kate said softly as she pushed the doors farther apart.
Oh, please let it be Mary, Rich thought, for more than one reason. A kidnapper with a gun would have been really bad.

Sweet Saturday Samples (9/3)

This week's Sweet Saturday Sample
comes from my upcoming title
Karma is a Vampire (The Gossip of Mysterious Lane #2)

***

Karma felt like a chicken that’d recently lost its head. The tiniest thread was the only portion left of her sanity. If it wasn’t her mother demanding she call the florist, it was her soon-to-be sister panicking because she hadn’t heard from Hank yet.

“The plane landed an hour ago,” she shrieked when yet another attempt went to voicemail. “What if they crashed?”

Seemingly the only voice of reason, Karma shrugged. “They didn’t crash. It’d be all over the news if they had.”

Instead of relaxing, Ramona’s eyes popped wide, her breath sawed in and out of her lungs in staggered puffs. Karma’s mother, Marion turned a glare on her daughter. She raced to Ramona’s side, patting her hand.

“I’m sure they’re fine, dear. Probably delayed at baggage claim.”

Hyperventilation was only a breath or two away. “Will you please do something?”

“What do you want me to do?” Karma matched her mother’s subdued panic tone, which earned her a look capable of frying an egg.

“Get a bag or something. We cannot have her out cold when your brother arrives.”

“Hopefully he beats the ambulance,” Karma muttered.

“Not funny, Karma.” Apparently Marion had lost her sense of humor, but Ramona had not. Her attempt at a giggle came out a snort and a coughing fit. Her face resembled a tomato as Karma ran down the hall in search of a paper sack. The task sounded easy enough, but boxes were too big—and square. Packing peanuts were out. Maybe she could fashion a paper sack with paper towels and Duck Tape.

Karma found some bags in a box in the bride’s room. But the damned things were plastic. Would that even work? She wasn’t sure. She doubted it. The last thing she needed was to suffocate the sister she’d always wanted.

Good hell! It should not be that hard to find a paper sack!

The last possible location was the kitchen. Karma rummaged through cabinets, slamming doors as she went. Under the sink she struck gold—or brown, as it were. One single, solitary brown paper sack. Okay, so the thing was big enough to hold an entire cart of groceries, but by damn, beggars couldn’t be choosers.

Sweet Saturday Samples (8/27)

Today's Sweet Saturday Samples features
a deletable taste of my Contemporary Romance
In It To Win It
currently available on Kindle, Nook, other ebook

Grayson finally made his way to stand before her. Those shoulders of his were even broader than she remembered—his body more toned with a wider chest, a narrower waist and more powerful thighs. The boy she’d known had become a delicious man. His dark hair was in a sweaty disarray, his cap having been removed, a dark curl rested against the tanned skin of his forehead.
He was sporting a goatee these days, trimmed close to his face, probably to hide the thin scar that she’d given him junior year. It was only fair; heaven knew that she wore enough scars from him. Hers were emotional—and still raw.
His heated gaze slowly roamed from her pink-painted toes to her face. Those perfect lips of his formed a smirk and her knees nearly gave out.
He stuck out his hand. “Hi. Grayson Pierce.”
Wow!
Of all the reactions he could have had to seeing her after so many years that was by far the last one Jane would have expected. It hurt—an honest to goodness dagger to the heart—that there was no recognition in his dark brown eyes.
She glanced down at his hand, but didn’t take it. She forced herself to make eye contact as she said, “Jane Alexander, KHB, can I get a comment on the win?”
His grin widened and he shouted, jabbing his fists into the air, “Rockets—all the way to the Series!” He winked at her. “And you can quote me on that.”

For my Sweet Saturday Sample this week,
I'm offering a morsel of my newest contemporary romance
IN IT TO WIN IT

She really shouldn’t.

She knew she shouldn’t call Grayson.
More to the point, she knew she shouldn’t want to call Grayson. But she did. And as she dialed the number he’d provided, her heart thumped wildly in her chest and her fingers shook. She ended up having to dial the number three times before she got all ten digits punched in the correct order.
“’Lo?”
“Grayson?” she asked, suddenly afraid he’d given her the wrong number. Wouldn’t that be a great joke?
“Jane!”
Nope, she had the right number.
“I’m so glad you called.”
“Thank you for the flowers.” Her voice sounded distant, and she was grateful to pull off the nonchalance—even if she was shaking like she’d been dumped out of a blender’s frappe cycle.
“Tulips are still your favorite, right?”
Suddenly she couldn’t breathe. Her chest felt tight and her eyes stung. He’d remembered her favorite flower. That was so sweet. So very, very sweet.
“Jane, you still there?”
“Yeah. I’m here.”
Her thoughts tumbled around in her head and she couldn’t manage to hold on to one for longer than a moment before another swooped in and assaulted her. Grayson made no sense; one moment he was flirty and handsome and remembering her favorite flower, the next he was aloof and almost cruel.
“I can’t do this.” She’d meant to only think the words and didn’t realize she’d spoken them until he responded.
“Can’t do what?”
Crap. She was glad when that word stayed in her head.
“This.” Her hand waved between her and the thin air where she imagined he’d be standing if this conversation were happening in person. “Grayson, I appreciate the flowers. They’re very pretty. But I need you to stop contacting me.”
“Why?” He sounded genuinely confused and that infuriated her.
Why? Come on, Grayson. This back and forth is giving me whiplash. I can’t do it anymore. Okay? My heart can’t do it anymore.”

Sweet Saturday Samples (7/30)

For my Sweet Saturday Sample this week,
I'm offering a taste of my Contemporary Romance, Fade to Black.

As they pulled up to the scene, the police were setting up their command center. Kate didn’t even wait for him before she headed into the throng of people.
Rich shouldn’t have been surprised. This was how Kate Callahan rolled. He’d watched her since she burst onto the scene two years ago. Thought she was beautiful then, but she was all business. Never took the time to get chummy with anyone but her sources. So, of course, she beelined it for the sheriff.
“What can you tell me?” she asked, gripping her pen for his response.
“Press conference in ten minutes, Kate.”
“Oh, come on, Reggie.” She was right on his heels as he started walking away. “I’m sure there’s something you can give me now,” she pressed.
He stopped, turned with a dramatic roll of his eyes, then smiled. “Kate.” He tsked his tongue, then whispered, “The mother thinks that the father took little Mary out of her bedroom sometime early this morning. He was just released from prison two weeks ago.”
Kate gasped, but didn’t react further as she jotted down some notes. “Did she have a restraining order against him?”
     “Yes,” he verified.
“Damn,” she muttered and made more notes.
“Well, I’ve got to get the PIO ready for the press conference.” He pulled a flyer off his clipboard and handed it to her. “You didn’t get this from me.” He winked and headed in the direction of the Public Information Officer.
“Thanks, Reggie.” Kate turned on her heel and smacked right into Rich’s chest.  “Oh, sorry.”
Rich chuckled and stole the chance to run his fingers through her silky, soft hair. “Now who’s apologizing?”
She slapped at his chest, her face turned from playful to serious in a flash. “Is the live truck here?” He nodded and motioned over her shoulder to where the microwave signal was being sent to the mountain. “Good.” She pulled her phone out of her pocket, pressed some buttons and put it to her ear. “Dale…yes…. Press Conference is in five, but I’d like to cut in now…. Okay.” She closed the phone and looked at Rich. “Let’s get a move on, Spencer, we go live in two.”
